Theme painting has existed since ancient times in China, is called “Dan Qing”. The technique is used for decorative painting drawn on Chinese traditional architecture. The technique then was spread to Korean Peninsula and Japan and was widely applied and enhanced significantly. Colored decoration for Chinese ancient architecture was drawn on building wood components such as beam, square column, window bar, doors, sparrow brace, bucket arch, wall, ceiling, melon tube, corner beam, rafter and handrail. It was majorly drawn on the bean and square column. Thus came the idiom “carving the beam and drawing the ridge pole”. The application and invention of colored decoration for Chinese architecture dates back to the Spring and Autumn Period 2000 years ago. The skill had been widely applied during Sui and Tang Dynasties and entered into a period of great prosperity in Qing Dynasty. The majority of architecture in Qing Dynasty was covered with exquisite and complex colored decoration.
